Super Mario XP is not a remake of the Super Mario games. It is a unique experience that combines the best of the two legendary sagas from the Nintendo Universe: Super Mario and Castlevania. To start with, it keeps the traditional methods of doing away with your enemies (jumping on them, throwing shells...) but it also adds new attacks that come from the classic vampire saga. Now Mario can use a cross-shaped boomerang that is typical of the Castlevania characters, that also requires ammunition that Mario must collect along the way.

The enemies come from the Super Mario games, but the scenes and backdrops have changed drastically, like the music, and there also exists a level boss at the end of each of the 7 levels (an eighth level exists as a bonus). Keeping the simplicity of NES games, the attack patterns of the level bosses are sufficiently creative to keep even the most expert players interested.

The game saves automatically at the end of each level, and the Mario character is controlled by the arrow keys, using the SHIFT key to jump, and the Z key to make a super-throw with whichever weapon Mario has at that moment. In summary, Super Mario XP is an absolutely essential game for any aficonado of videogames in general, and those of Nintendo in particular.
