The original Olympic games started in 776BC in Olympia. It was a series of athletic competitions for the best sportsmen in the villages and states of Ancient Greece.

The first modern Olympic Games were in Athens in 1896. From the 241 participants from 14 countries then, the Games have grown to, for example in 2004, 11,100 competitors from 202 countries.
